European authorities propel a novel campaign advocating for cannabis integration within healthcare.

In the realm of digital healthcare, online platforms have revolutionised the way we access and understand various products, including medical cannabis. This plant, with a history dating back thousands of years in ancient China and Egypt, has found a new lease of life in the 21st century.

The use of cannabis in Western medicine was rediscovered in the 19th century, and it was employed in numerous medicines. However, in the 1930s, its reputation took a hit, leading to its ban in many countries. Fast forward to today, and medical cannabis is once again being accepted worldwide for treating diseases such as chronic pain and certain neurological disorders.

In Germany, the provision of medical cannabis through online pharmacies has opened up new perspectives for healthcare. With convenient access, a wide range of products, and assurance of quality and safety, these platforms have become a viable option for many patients. They offer consulting services with experts available for questions, recommendations, and individual consultations.

However, a recent draft bill proposed by the Federal Ministry of Health threatens to disrupt this progress. The bill aims to impose tighter restrictions on prescribing medical cannabis, including a ban on dispensing it via postal-order services offered by pharmacies, a requirement for mandatory in-person consultations and authorisations by physicians, and a prohibition on online distribution and telemedicine models for medical cannabis prescriptions.

These proposed measures have drawn criticism for being disproportionate and potentially unconstitutional. Stakeholders argue that they limit the freedom of profession of pharmacists and telemedicine providers, eliminate reliable nationwide access for patients, and undermine telemedicine advancements. The ban on mail-order dispensing is seen as especially impactful.

Interestingly, prescriptions from EU-licensed doctors may still be valid in Germany under EU law, even if issued via telemedicine, but mail-order dispensing would be banned if the draft passes.

Currently, cannabis is only legally available in Germany with a prescription and after other treatment options have been exhausted. It is classified as a narcotic and is only prescribed for patients with severe illnesses. Specialized cannabis pharmacies are available to provide comprehensive advice on medical cannabis in larger cities.

Online cannabis pharmacies, gaining popularity and not limited to specific geographical areas in Germany, offer a wide range of cannabis medications. Ordering cannabis online is usually straightforward, especially if a medical prescription is available. However, traditional pharmacies in rural areas may be cautious about offering medical cannabis.

Regulation, staff training, and ensuring uniform quality standards are challenges associated with integrating medical cannabis into pharmacies. Despite these challenges, the current regulatory environment in Germany has supported online and mail-order medical cannabis pharmacies, driving rapid market growth.

The draft bill is still under public consultation and may be amended before becoming law. The future of online medical cannabis pharmacies in Germany hangs in the balance, with stakeholders eagerly awaiting the final decision.
