Emergency services dispatched by the Fire Department
In a groundbreaking initiative, fire departments across Bavaria have begun participating in the Defi-Bridge project, aiming to bridge the critical time until the arrival of the rescue service in emergency situations.
Sudden cardiac arrest, a common cause of death in Germany and Europe, demands immediate action. The likelihood of survival decreases by about 10 percent each minute without effective resuscitation, making quick response crucial. This is where Defi-Bridge comes into play.
Launched due to the proximity of firefighters, who can arrive at the scene several minutes before the paramedic and rescue service, Defi-Bridge aims to potentially decide between life and death in these critical moments.
The training provided to firefighters involves learning essential skills such as safe use of defibrillators and CPR. The Medical Director of the Rescue Service, Jürgen König, has demonstrated how firefighters should handle the defibrillator.
Fire departments in Adlkofen, Tiefenbach, Pörndorf, Wörth, Bodenkirchen, Furth, Essenbach, Jesendorf, Bruckberg, Gundlkofen, Baierbach, Attenhausen, Stollnried, Aham, Ergolding, Geisenhausen, Vilsheim, and Piflas have already joined the Defi-Bridge project. More fire departments are expressing interest in joining.
On June 10, 2025, the FF Oberglaim fire department joined the ranks, having been trained as first responders in cases of cardiac arrest and Defi-Bridge. Some of these participating fire departments have already been called to emergency situations involving cardiac arrest, successfully providing initial care to patients with CPR and defibrillator application before medical personnel arrive.
The Integrated Control Center alerts both the ambulance and paramedic and the local fire department in an emergency. This early response system ensures that help is on the way as quickly as possible, potentially saving lives in the process.
The fire department's role extends beyond fire-fighting, serving as an indispensable part of a modern rescue system. The Defi-Bridge project is a testament to this, demonstrating the crucial role firefighters play in the community.
