Elderly Brazilian nun, recognized as the world's oldest, passes away at the age of 116.

In a heartfelt announcement, the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity shared the passing of their esteemed member, Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas, on April 30, at the age of 116 and 326 days. The world lost an extraordinary figure, whom they fondly remember for her dedication and devotion.

Born on June 8, 1908, in the tranquil city of Saint Francis of Assisi, southern Brazil, Sister Inah began her religious life at 16 in a Sisters of Charity school in Santana do Livrado, near the Uruguay border. She later took her nun's vows at 26 and spent an impressive career in religious service, also serving as a teacher and secretary. As for her secret to longevity, she modestly credited it all to her faith, asserting that God is the secret to everything.

When Japanese woman Tomiko Itooka, also 116, passed away in January, Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas held the title as the world's oldest person, according to the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) and LongeviQuest.

Although Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas has left us, she marked history as the second-oldest nun on record, surpassed only by Frenchwoman Lucile Randon, who lived to be 118 before her passing in 2023. The title of world's oldest living nun remains undetermined at present.

Now, the baton has passed to Ethel Caterham, a 115-year-old resident of Surrey, England, who continues to break records as the new world's oldest living person—but her status as a nun has not been confirmed[1][3].
