Let's dive into the grim event unfolded on a Guadeloupe road on March 25. Prosecutors in Pointe-à-Pitre announced on May 12, the crash claimed a life, allegedly due to a malfunctioning Takata airbag, a saga that's been plaguing the auto industry since 2014.

The post-mortem examination confirmed that the airbag blowup in a crash within the Moule area resulted in the unfortunate death. As per Caroline Calbo, the Prosecutor of the Republic of Pointe-à-Pitre, this information was relayed to Agence France-Presse (AFP). Calbo also mentioned that an investigating judge is engaged in probing involuntary manslaughter, working on wrapping up the investigation for handover to the investigating judge of the JIRS [specialized interregional jurisdiction] in Paris.

The Ministry of Justice has asked for all inquiries into the consequences attributable to these airbag malfunctions to be centralized at the JIRS in Paris, including those concerning involuntary manslaughter.

The Persistent Takata Airbag Scandal

The Takata airbag predicament has cast a long, dark shadow over the auto industry since 2014. Recently, manufacturers have recalled hundreds of thousands of vehicles to replace the faulty devices that have led to more than a dozen fatalities in France. As of Monday's announcement, twelve such tragedies have already been recorded.

Before the Guadeloupe announcement, the Ministry of Transport reported 29 accidents resulting in eleven deaths overseas and one domestically in France.

The unfortunate incident in Guadeloupe involved a Toyota Hilux, a not-so-recent vehicle that was added to the recall campaign. Charles-Henri Coppet, a lawyer representing families of eleven deceased and twelve injured victims, indicated that it's too early to determine whether the victim received a recall notification. The collision occurred in a notorious danger zone, as the fire department explained following the incident. The man, trapped within his vehicle, was extracted upon arrival of the firefighters, only to find him in cardiac arrest.

The Peril of Deteriorating Airbags

The Takata airbags' destruction is attributed to a gaseous substance that degrades rapidly. This defective Takata airbag can potentially explode and hurl shrapnel at drivers. Their degradation rate is particularly accelerated in tropical climates.
