Criticism Mounts on Judge Kreplak as PRO Advocates for an Investigative Committee Regarding Fentanyl-Related Fatalities

"Deputy Silvana Giudici claims a serious matter of concealment is at play. She calls for immediate action from the Judiciary, accusing Kirchnerism of hindering investigations. Last week, the K bloc blocked the progression of a commission's formation in the House of Representatives."

In Argentina, the ongoing investigation into the deaths caused by contaminated fentanyl has surpassed 100 confirmed fatalities as of mid-August 2025. The contaminated batches, infected with multidrug-resistant bacteria such as Klebsiella pneumoniae and Ralstonia pickettii, have been linked to at least 96 confirmed deaths across multiple provinces including Buenos Aires, Formosa, Córdoba, Santa Fe, and Bahía Blanca[1][3][5].

At the heart of the probe are pharmaceutical companies HLB Pharma Group S.A. and Laboratorio Ramallo, which produced and distributed the contaminated fentanyl. Ariel Furfaro García, the owner of these companies, is a central figure in the investigation, with his assets frozen and him among at least 24 individuals questioned by the court[1][3][5].

Judge Ernesto Kreplak, who is leading the judicial investigation, has faced political pressure but continues to oversee the case. The Argentine president, Javier Milei, has publicly accused the prior Kirchner administration of ties to implicated businessmen and pressured for arrests, which the judge has publicly resisted, reminding the president not to interfere in the judicial process[3].

Argentina’s ANMAT drug regulatory agency initiated the investigation after a hospital reported the tainted drugs to its officials[1]. No arrests have yet been made, but the court has frozen assets of individuals involved. The scandal remains a significant public health disaster in Argentina, causing widespread protests by families of victims demanding justice[1][3][5].

The PRO insists on the creation of an investigative commission to clarify the issue and denounce responsible parties, as they accuse Kirchnerism of blocking its treatment in the Chamber of Deputies. Deputy Silvana Giudici again affirmed that it is indispensable for a commission to work in Congress to investigate the issue. She emphasised that "there is a very dark issue of cover-up" to prevent the real responsible parties of the adulterated fentanyl from being exposed[6].

The PRO's project for creating an investigative commission includes determining the causes and responsibilities for the use of contaminated fentanyl distributed and used in the health system. The production and commercialization chain of fentanyl and other pharmaceutical products of HLB Pharma Group and Laboratorios Ramallo, as well as those of the involved pharmacies and healthcare facilities, will be investigated. Possible links and responsibilities of physical or legal persons, public officials or former officials involved in the events under investigation will be investigated[2].

The final report must contain a detailed description of the actions taken, the conclusions reached, the responsibilities that may arise, and the appropriate recommendations[4]. As the investigation continues, the number of confirmed deaths from contaminated fentanyl stands at 76, with Judge Kreplak revealing that around 45,000 ampoules of contaminated fentanyl were administered to patients throughout the country[3].
