In the heart of Solingen, Germany, City Hospital Solingen is hosting a special event dedicated to raising awareness about colon diseases. The Darm Information Day, scheduled for November 8th, promises to provide valuable insights into common colon diseases, their symptoms, risk factors, diagnostic methods, and treatment options.

The day will begin with a lecture by Prof. Dr. Boris Pfaffenbach at 14.00 - 14.30H, focusing on the importance of prevention programs and endoscopy's role in diagnostics and therapy. This will be followed by Prof. Dr. Peter Schenker's lecture at 14.30 - 15.00H, discussing surgical techniques used in colon diseases.

The event will feature information stands from specialized departments within the hospital, all actively involved in the field of colon diseases. These stands will offer a wealth of information on various aspects of colon health.

One of the highlights of the day will be a seven-meter-long, walk-through colon model, designed to introduce the organ and its most common diseases to the people of Solingen. Guided tours through this model will be led by chief physicians Prof. Dr. Boris Pfaffenbach, Prof. Dr. Peter Schenker, and Dr. Viola Fox.

The self-help group ILCO Bergisch-Land will also have a stand at the event, providing support and resources for those affected by colon diseases.

The Darm Information Day at City Hospital Solingen is free from advertisements, ensuring a focused and informative experience for all attendees. The event will take place at Hofgarten Solingen, Level 0.

Common diseases of the colon include ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diverticular disease, and gastrointestinal infections. Prevention methods mainly involve maintaining a healthy diet rich in fiber, proper hydration, avoiding smoking, managing stress, and regular medical screenings, especially if there is a family history or other risk factors.

Diagnostic approaches for colon diseases generally include clinical symptom evaluation, stool tests, blood tests, imaging studies, and most definitively, a colonoscopy. Colonoscopy allows direct visualization of the colon lining and enables biopsy taking for precise diagnosis.

Treatment approaches vary by disease. For ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease (both are types of inflammatory bowel disease, IBD), treatment includes anti-inflammatory medications, immunosuppressants, dietary management, and sometimes surgery in severe cases. In IBS, treatment focuses on symptom relief through dietary changes, stress management, and sometimes medications for diarrhea, constipation, or pain. Diverticular disease treatment involves dietary fiber increase, antibiotics if infection occurs, and surgery for complicated cases. Gastrointestinal infections are treated according to cause, often with hydration, rest, and specific medications (antibiotics for bacterial infections, supportive care for viral infections).

The colonoscopy process typically involves preparation, the procedure, recovery, and biopsy or polypectomy if necessary. The procedure is essential for diagnosis and prevention, including colon cancer screening.
