Canada Admits Wrongdoing in Residential Schools, 'Sixties Scoop'
In a historic admission, the Canadian state has acknowledged wrongdoing, confessing to severing Indigenous family ties and destroying cultural heritage through its Residential Schools and 'Sixties Scoop' policies. This comes after Pope Francis' apology in April 2022 for the Catholic Church's abuse of Indigenous Canadians.
Residential Schools, introduced in the late 19th century, were mostly run by the Roman Catholic or Anglican Church. Children were taken from their families and sent to these schools, where they were entrusted to white middle-class parents. The last of these schools closed in 1997.
The 'Sixties Scoop' involved Canadian laws that allowed the state to seize Indigenous children from their parents. Wilfred Buck, a Cree elder, returned home in the late 1960s to find his siblings gone, victims of this policy. Buck struggled with addiction, homelessness, and prison before reconnecting with his Cree heritage. Today, he combines scientific findings with ancestral stories to teach diverse audiences.
Indigenous author Lee Maracle describes these actions as genocide. The stolen children were subjected to cultural assimilation, often losing touch with their families and traditions. The Sundance ceremony, a sacred spiritual ritual, was among the cultural practices that were suppressed.
The Canadian state's admission of wrongdoing is a step towards healing and reconciliation. It acknowledges the pain caused by Residential Schools and the 'Sixties Scoop', policies that severed family ties and destroyed Indigenous culture. Wilfred Buck's story serves as a testament to resilience and the importance of preserving cultural heritage.
