The Storehouse: A Beacon of Hope in the DMV Area
The Storehouse, a self-funded grassroots food bank based in Prince George's County, Maryland, is making a significant impact in the lives of thousands of families. Founded by stroke survivor Mel Johnson in 2021, this unique organisation is recognised as the nation's first Black-run food bank in the United States.
A History of Service
Since its inception, The Storehouse has been dedicated to ending hunger and serving in love. By 2022, it had served over 50,000 families, a testament to its purpose, passion, and what Johnson describes as divine instruction. The organisation also fosters youth leadership through its Youth Leadership Council (YLC), providing high school students with leadership experience and community engagement opportunities.
