The Storehouse: A Beacon of Hope in the DMV Area

The Storehouse, a self-funded grassroots food bank based in Prince George's County, Maryland, is making a significant impact in the lives of thousands of families. Founded by stroke survivor Mel Johnson in 2021, this unique organisation is recognised as the nation's first Black-run food bank in the United States.

A History of Service

Since its inception, The Storehouse has been dedicated to ending hunger and serving in love. By 2022, it had served over 50,000 families, a testament to its purpose, passion, and what Johnson describes as divine instruction. The organisation also fosters youth leadership through its Youth Leadership Council (YLC), providing high school students with leadership experience and community engagement opportunities.

Services Offered

The Storehouse offers a variety of services, including food distribution programs, educational classes, and youth leadership development programs. Its food distribution initiatives are often partnered with local churches and government entities, such as the District 8 food distribution kickoff. The Saturday morning Academy, supplemented by nutritious food offerings like the YLC protein bites project, is an example of the educational classes it provides.

Upcoming Events

The Storehouse continues to expand its support throughout the year with ongoing efforts to extend food distribution programs. While specific future event dates beyond the regular programs are not yet announced, the organisation's Instagram presence suggests continuous community engagement and potential new initiatives.

The Food Drive

On April 12 (previously scheduled for April 19), The Storehouse will hold a food drive from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Trinity Assembly of God in Latham, Md. Registration for the event is required and can be done on the organisation's website. The food distributed during the drive consists of fresh, nutritious whole foods, not boxed or packaged goods.

A Comprehensive Approach

The Storehouse provides more than just food. It offers free mental health resources, gently used clothing, and baby supplies. The organisation serves the DMV area (Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and South Carolina) and has been instrumental in helping families facing food insecurity, including veterans, senior citizens, and women-led households.

Looking Ahead

The Storehouse's commitment to its mission is evident in its upcoming events and initiatives. On May 25, The Storehouse will hold its annual Service Ball. More information about the gala, donations, and emergency groceries can be found on the organisation's website.

In summary, The Storehouse is more than just a food bank. It is a beacon of hope, combining food assistance, community empowerment, and youth development. As the first Black-run food bank in the U.S., it is making a significant impact, serving thousands of families and nurturing future leaders in the process.

The Storehouse, beyond offering food assistance, also focuses on health-and-wellness by providing free mental health resources. Additionally, its services extend to nutrition and lifestyle by offering educational classes such as the Saturday morning Academy with nutritious food offerings like the YLC protein bites project.
