Beach Shutdown for Bathing at Nazaré

Nazaré Beach in Portugal has been closed for swimming following an unexpected incident involving the storm sewer system in the district of Leiria. The beach closure is a precautionary measure, as more than 30 people reportedly visited the emergency room with symptoms related to the situation, such as vomiting and diarrhea.

The technical issue led to an anomalous runoff near the shoreline, accompanied by bad odours. The city government is taking active measures to prevent any future occurrences and ensure the safety of the public.

The city government is currently conducting water quality tests to determine the contamination level and ensure the beach is safe for swimming once again. As of August 2, 2025, the exact status of the beach remains pending, with no final water quality test results publicly released.

Prior to this incident, Nazaré’s seawater was generally regarded as clear and suitable for swimming during the season. However, the recent contamination has temporarily compromised water safety.

The city government's ongoing monitoring and surveillance are aimed at ensuring the beach remains safe for swimming once the water quality tests are complete and the beach is reopened. The city's actions demonstrate a commitment to addressing and preventing any potential public health risks related to the storm sewer system issue.

In a press release, the municipality of the district of Leiria shared the information, but did not specify the expected time for the beach to reopen. The city government is prioritizing public safety and is focusing on analyzing the water at the pipe outlet to ensure the safety of the population.

The source of the bad odours is directly related to the storm sewer system issue. The city government is monitoring the situation closely, with reinforced monitoring and frequent on-site surveillance to prevent any recurrence of the issue.
