Alassio, Italy - A Day Dedicated to Combating Parkinson's Disease

Yesterday in Alassio, a significant turnout and an emotional atmosphere marked the day dedicated to fighting Parkinson's disease. The event, organized and led by Dr. Tiziano Tamburini, head of the Parkinson's disease outpatient clinic in the Neurology Department of the S. Corona Hospital, was sponsored by the Sports Department of the Alassio Municipality, in collaboration with the company Gesco.

The morning commenced with a demonstration of Adapted Physical Activity (AFA Parkinson) for Parkinson's patients. In the afternoon, the Auditorium of the Civic Library hosted the medical-scientific conference "Parkinson and Physical Activity - Moving together," directed by Dr. Tamburini. The conference was opened by the greetings of the Sports Assessor of the Alassio Municipality, Roberta Zucchinetti, and the Director of Social Health of ASL2, Monica Cirone.

Distinguished neurorehabilitation specialists from the UK, including Beccy Oliver, Annie Rainbow, and Emma Bracher, as well as chinesiologist Marian Mocanu, physiatrists Antonella Garnero and Carmelo Lentino, and neurologist Franco Bruno Grassi, participated in the conference.

The AFA Parkerson project, active in the ASL 2 area for several years, currently involves six municipalities in Liguria, including Alassio, and has over 130 patients. This number makes it the second largest such initiative in Italy, primarily made up of patients from the Movement Disorders Outpatient Clinic of the Santa Corona Hospital and, in some cases, from the Savona presidium and the Imperia area.

Kinesiologist Marian Mocanu expressed her gratitude to the participating neurorehabilitation professionals from the UK, stating, "I greatly appreciate the work of my professional references, Dr. Beccy Oliver, Dr. Annie Rainbow, and Dr. Emma Bracher. On behalf of our patients, I express my gratitude as their work truly makes a difference in people's lives."

Although specific details about an AFA Parkinson program in Liguria are not documented, adapted physical activity programs for Parkinson's patients in Italy are designed to improve the quality of life, mobility, and independence of people with Parkinson's, slow disease progression, promote independence, and provide social integration. These programs are increasingly recognized as an essential component of non-pharmacological therapy in the country.
