Hey there, folks! The air ain't just crisp in Saxony these days – it's downright filthy, according to the 2024 reports. The original sin here is the crummy weather that hit the region hard during the winter months, but the real bitchslap came with a Saharan dust event that went down over Easter.

The Saxon State Office for Environment, Agriculture, and Geology (LfULG) had some unpleasant news to share. They noticed a serious spike in the fine dust concentrations that year, with the number of exceedance days for PM10 jumping from a puny seven in 2023 to a whopping 72 days in 2024. Thanks to the Saharan dust event, the PM10 daily limit value of 50 micrograms per cubic meter was busted at all Saxon measuring stations on the Saturday before Easter and Easter Sunday.

On the flip side, the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentration at traffic-heavy measuring stations showed a welcome decrease. "So what?" you ask. Well, it's likely due to the increase in electric vehicles and vehicle renewals. However, at rural measuring stations, the concentrations ticked up by a tick, and it might be related to the weather conditions.

The ozone concentration in 2024 was deemed moderate, and the legal ozone target value for health protection was met. And the values for other air pollutants like benzene and sulfur dioxide were unremarkable and way below the legal limits.

In a nutshell, the winter weather conditions of 2024 contributed to the deterioration of air quality in Saxony, and the Saharan dust event over Easter made it even grittier. While there's no specific data on how much worse it was compared to previous years, the prevailing conditions in 2024 were anything but A-okay for your lungs.

  1. The alarming increase in fine dust concentrations in Saxony, as reported by the Saxon State Office for Environment, Agriculture, and Geology (LfULG), is a matter of great concern for the community's policy on health-and-wellness, especially considering the impact of climate change on environment and environmental science.
  2. To address this issue, the implementation of science-backed strategies to reduce particulate matter emissions, improve air quality, and mitigate the effects of climate change on the environment could be crucial for the well-being of Dresden's community and the overall sustainability of the region.
