The Vibe on Meerbusch's Aid to Fastiv

Meerbusch, Germany, never shies away from helping its Ukrainian partner city Fastiv. During the Easter holidays, the city, with the help of the "Meerbusch helps" association and other dedicated volunteers, organized the transport of three donated vehicles to Fastiv. Across 2000 kilometers, three drivers - Dirk Thorand, Jenny Palacios, and Bastian Förster - journeyed, delivering a donated fire engine amidst their trek.

While en route, they witnessed the urgent need for medical aid in Fastiv, particularly during their visit to the Rehazentrum for veterans and war wounded, currently being expanded. Knowing the gravity of the situation, they also arranged for the subsequent delivery of critical medical supplies to Fastiv.

The deliveries mainly consisted of equipment for expanding another rehabilitation station in Fastiv. Beds, mattresses, therapy couches, ergometers, pulley systems, and a practice staircase were loaded onto the truck. The Meerbusch Sanitätshaus Brockers donated three pallets of hygiene materials, adding to the pile.

Additional assistance came via Heike Schumacher, from Osterath-Bovert, living in Munich. Engaging in aid work for Ukrainians since the war started, she organized medical supplies worth approximately 50,000 euros for the "Fastiv Multidisciplinary Hospital for Intensive Care" through her team.

The organization of the aid transport was jointly managed by "Meerbusch helps" and contact partners of the cities of Meerbusch and Fastiv. Completing the customs paperwork for uninterrupted travel was a time-consuming task.

Now, the truck has safely arrived in Fastiv, funded by donations gathered by "Meerbusch helps." Dirk Thorand, chair of "Meerbusch helps," emphasizes the importance of continued aid, "We can't stop helping now." The circumstances on the ground have worsened, notably due to diminished financial support from abroad, especially from the USA. Fastiv houses numerous war-wounded and internally displaced persons and is expanding its rehabilitation services to support the recovery of veterans. "The aid transports showcase city partnership, and we're glad we can directly aid Fastiv," Thorand states, as "Meerbusch helps" plans further inquiries with the city administration to identify ongoing needs in the war zone.
