ACL Tears: Common Sports Injuries Among Athletes

ACL tears are common sports injuries, particularly among basketball, football, and soccer players. These tears occur when the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee is damaged, often due to jumping or pivoting movements. Female athletes are two to ten times more likely to experience this injury than males.

ACL tears can happen due to various reasons. Landing flat-footed from a jump, overextending the knee joint, rapid changes in direction, or speed while running can all lead to a tear. Additionally, a direct hit to the side of the knee, as in a car accident or football tackle, can cause this injury. Ignoring a torn ACL can result in further knee damage.

Symptoms of an ACL tear include a popping sound at the time of injury, followed by swelling within six hours. Pain when walking, twisting, or turning, and a feeling of instability in the knee are also common. An orthopedic surgeon or knee specialist can diagnose the injury through a physical exam and tests like X-rays, MRI, and CT scans.

ACL tears are common among athletes and can cause pain and swelling. Treatment depends on the severity of the injury and may involve surgery and physical therapy. To reduce the risk of ACL injuries, targeted strength training, especially for the quadriceps and hamstrings, and injury prevention exercises focusing on balance, agility, and proper landing techniques are recommended.
