Life takes an unexpected turn

The film industry has taken a grievous blow with the demise of acclaimed director James Foley, best known for his gripping adaptations and TV series epics, who succumbed to a year-long battle with a terminal brain tumor, as revealed by insider magazine "Variety". His family confirmed his passing at his LA residence this past week.

From the Streets of Brooklyn to the Silver Screen

Like a raw, undiscovered diamond mined from the Brooklyn streets, James Foley transformed into a creative powerhouse, leaving an indelible mark on the silver screen. While his most celebrated work remains the adaptation of David Mamet's play "Glengarry Glen Ross" (1992), he was known for directing a plethora of atmospheric, noir-tinged stories, alongside numerous A-list celebrities.

Foley's Cinematic Journey began in 1984 with the music drama "Reckless", starring Daryl Hannah and Aidan Quinn. This was soon followed by "At Close Range" (1986) featuring Sean Penn and Christopher Walken, and the rhythmic melodies of Madonna's "Live to Tell" wrapped in the film's narrative - an intriguing synergy as Madonna was married to Penn during this time.

Working with pop sensation Madonna wasn't his only connection to the music world; he also directed music videos for the enigmatic artist and her film "Who’s That Girl" (1987), an experience he once described as a "big life experience" following its commercial underperformance.

Apart from his work with Madonna, James Foley directed "After Dark, My Sweet" (1990), the Al Pacino films "Two Bits" and "Confidence", and the riveting thriller "Perfect Stranger" starring Halle Berry and Bruce Willis. More recently, he helmed the sequels to the erotic thriller "Fifty Shades of Grey".

Television's Maestro

James Foley's influence on the small screen is equally profound, having directed 12 episodes of the critically-acclaimed and successful Netflix series "House of Cards" (2013-2018), as well as episodes of "Twin Peaks", "Billions", "Wayward Pines", and the chilling horror anthology series "Hannibal".
